Girls Varsity Soccer Season

The Portledge Girls Varsity Soccer Team is having a season to remember, showcasing the results of their hard work, commitment, and determination. This year, the team fought through tough battles, overcame multiple injuries, and adjusted to the loss of several talented seniors. As players come and go each year, this season brought big changes, but that didn’t stop the girls from playing their hearts out and fighting for victory.

The season started off with a statement win, as the team defeated the defending NYSAIS state champions, Brearley, in their first home game of the year. Taking down the reigning champions proved that Portledge has what it takes to compete at the next level and set the tone for the rest of the season.

Not only did the girls have an incredible season, but for the first time in Portledge history, the team captured the PSAA Championship for the sixth consecutive year. Previously, Portledge had reached five straight championships but struggled to secure the sixth. This year, they broke through, playing a beautiful game and earning a dominant 3–0 victory over Stony Brook in the finals. Junior Jordan Cooper stood out in goal, making several key saves and anchoring the defense throughout the match.

While many games stood out, one of the most memorable moments came on Founders Day when the girls faced Packer Collegiate. Despite injuries and lineup changes, the team rose to the challenge and delivered a commanding 2–0 win. Junior Abby Rigg scored both goals, while senior Mackenzie Devine held strong in net, earning a shutout with several outstanding saves.

The team finished the season with an impressive record, losing only two games all year. They faced some of their toughest competition yet and continued to rise to every challenge. This season was all about resilience, growth, and teamwork, as many players stepped into new roles and made crucial contributions. After two tough losses in a row, the girls bounced back with a huge 5–0 victory over Waldorf. What made that win even more special was that all five goals were scored by freshmen. The game showcased the team’s depth, talent, and spirit, and became the turning point that restored their confidence and energy for the rest of the season.

The girls now head into NYSAIS states, where they will hopefully dominate and bring home not only the PSAA championship, but the NYSAIS State Championship as well. We wish our girls the best of luck and could not be prouder! The Girls Varsity Soccer team has jumped many hurdles and become a team that is stronger than ever. The girls varsity soccer team has reached a new level of play that Portledge cannot wait to see continue under the amazing guidance of coach Phillip Hills and Dan Giorgi!
