Kennedy Abrahams '26: Girls Varsity Basketball Leading Scorer
By Nia Green

This 2023-2024 season, the Portledge Girls Varsity Basketball team played incredibly, dominating their competition and putting this basketball program on the map in Long Island. Although they took a crushing loss to the Stony Brook School in the league championship, their rankings allowed them to play in a play-in game to make the New York State Association of Independent School (NYSAIS) tournament. As expected, considering their grit and determination all season, they played top-notch basketball throughout the tournament, making it to the NYSAIS semi-finals.
However, this team’s success can not be viewed thoroughly without acknowledging point guard Kennedy Abrahams. Currently a sophomore, Kennedy started playing basketball at five and has had numerous unmatched experiences. From seventh grade to her freshman year, she played on one of the best high school teams on Long Island, the Long Island Lutheran School, while still being consistent on her AAU teams. As she transferred into Portledge while having the support of the Athletics department and PGVB head coach Kara Becker, Kennedy truly made her mark this season. She ended up being the leading scorer of the team, finishing her season with a total of 338 points. Kennedy currently plays AAU for LI Lightning with Coach Becker as well as Renegades. Her exceptional talent was even recognized by Newsday, where she was listed # 3 in “2024 Girls Basketball Leaders.” In Kennedy’s words, this achievement is extremely special and “definitely a really big accomplishment for me because it’s something that I never really thought I could do.” Overall, Kennedy has been an incredible addition to the Portledge basketball program, and we cannot wait to see what more she accomplishes over the next two years!
