The Portledge Press
Special Interview With Mr. Hager
Morgan Butler

Recently, members of The Press were able to sit down with Portledge’s new math teacher Mr. Hager for a special interview. Below is a Q&A style format that allows the Portledge community to learn more about our new faculty member.
Q: What subject do you teach at Portledge and why did you choose to teach it?
A: I teach math at Portledge, currently working with geometry and precalculus students. Although I had always considered a career in teaching, I began to pursue it seriously in college. I quickly found that the best part of my day was working with fellow students at my role as a teaching assistant for the mathematics department.

Q: So far, what is your favorite thing about Portledge?
A: I have really enjoyed getting to know my students. So many of them have such interesting hobbies and passions. I also love the campus—it is beautiful!

Q: What is one word you would use to describe your experience at Portledge so far?
A: Supportive. I am grateful for the incredible support from my colleagues. Mrs. Lambiaso, Mr. Corby, and the deans have been a great help. In return, I’m committed to supporting my students by being attentive to their questions in class and offering extra help during conference and free periods.

Q: Where did you work before and how did you find out about Portledge?
A: I most recently taught 7th grade math at Woodland Middle School in East Meadow. I also taught two summer classes: one at Locust Valley High School and one right here at Portledge! Before applying, I did not know much about Portledge, but I am so glad to have found a role here.
Q: What do you enjoy doing in your down time?
A: I am a pretty avid long distance runner. While I don’t log as many miles as I once did, I still aim to fit in 2-3 runs each week.
Q: What motivates you?
A. I am motivated everyday by the opportunity to make an impact on my students. I come to school excited to help them meet their academic and personal goals. I design my class around a growth mindset, so seeing my students’ progress really inspires me to keep pushing forward and improving.
Q. What do you think is your best quality?
A. I would say that my best quality is my dedication. I strive to provide the best for my students every day to make sure they feel supported inside and outside of the classroom.

Q. Is there anything else you would like others to know about you?
Winter is my favorite season. I have always enjoyed snow and the colder weather.
