For Students, By Students
The Portledge Press
Welcome Mr. Powers
Remy Terranova

Ever since he joined Portledge School at the end of last school year, Mr. Powers has continued to make a positive impact on the community. As Portledge’s new athletic trainer and health teacher, he has helped countless athletes recover from injuries and prepare for games, and he is always ready to support and assist Portledge students. Recently, members of The Press were able to sit down with him to learn more about him and his experiences. Below is a brief summary of what we learned:

During his time in academia, Mr. Powers wanted to go into physical therapy after he took a gap year between undergraduate and graduate school. He had worked at a camp with kids and it was there that he realized he would love to teach students in the future. Mr. Powers later applied for a job and the following year became an assistant teacher for students in the first grade. Eventually, Mr. Powers started teaching at Riverdale Country Day School, a prominent school in the Bronx. During his time at Riverdale, their school had played a hockey game against Portledge, which was much closer to where he lived compared to the Bronx. Mr. Powers reached out to Portledge about the game and later saw on the website that there was a job opening.
One of Mr. Powers’ favorite aspects about Portledge is the small class sizes because he believes it makes it easier to connect with students. He also mentioned that the athletic department and his peers are great and that he is very grateful for them. Mr. Powers hopes that his teaching inspires others to be their authentic selves every day. Overall, Portledge is so happy to have Mr. Powers become a part of the community, and is extremely grateful for all of his hard work, contributions, and dedication.
