The Portledge Girls Varsity Cross Country Team had a memorable season. They began their preseason in August with a dedicated attitude, excited to prepare for the upcoming competitions. Despite the long, hot days, tough workouts, and challenging dynamics, the team maintained a positive outlook and consistently showed up ready to give their best.
Winning their first meet set the tone for a great start to the season. With unwavering support from their teammates and their committed coach, Zachary Pilson’12, they achieved many more victories. Although they faced some losses towards the end of the season when Stony Brook added some last-minute runners, the girls persevered. Their determination paid off as they won the PSAA final meet, breaking Stony Brook's streak of first-place finishes.
As other sports wrapped up and students began to head home early, the cross country team remained on campus, continuing to practice for their important state meet—even on Halloween—recognizing the importance of hard work to stay in shape. While the team did not secure any victories at the state meet, they celebrated their efforts and concluded the season with cherished memories of their cross-country family.
Nia Green ‘26 summed up their achievement: “I was so proud of the team this season. Despite all of the injuries and difficult practices, we truly rallied to have a successful end of the season. During his first year as head coach, Coach Pilson did a phenomenal job as he not only trained us to be great competitors but gave us the fundamentals necessary to conquer during meets. We cannot thank him enough for his support and dedication to this team.” The Portledge Girls Varsity Cross Country team showcased their hard work and skill during this year’s successful season, and they will for sure have another one next year.
