Portledge Girls Varsity Tennis

Madalena Peterson

Throughout the fall, Portledge varsity sports teams worked hard to prepare for competitive seasons, dedicating themselves fully to represent the Portledge Panthers. One of the standout teams this fall was the Girls Varsity Tennis team, of which I was fortunate to be a part of.  Through commitment, determination, and team spirit, we achieved an impressive, nearly undefeated season. Our only loss came against our rivals, Stony Brook, but we persevered to finish as the 2024 Private School Championship runners-up, an accomplishment we are all incredibly proud of.

Our season began in late August, with intense training sessions focused on conditioning, strategy, and endurance. Coaches Don and Tonya worked closely with each of us, pushing us to refine our skills and strengthen our mental toughness. Early scrimmages against challenging teams helped sharpen our skills and build a close bond within the team. The motto “Be the Best” became our rallying cry, fueling our ambition and drive in every practice and match.

The warmth and leadership from our senior captains, Reese Kugel and Ellis Rosenberg, played an essential role in creating true team spirit. They brought us together, supporting each of us both on and off the court. This season wasn’t just about matches; it was about building a team. We grew close, motivated each other, and pushed past our limits. Looking back, this season was not only a set of victories, but a journey of growth and friendship that has left a lasting impact on each of us.
